We met Zach Sobiech for the first time at a fundraiser he was hosting in his hometown. It was right after we started Love Your Melon six years ago and he was one of the first people we gave a beanie to. Zach was battling osteosarcoma, but he was determined to live each day to the fullest. At 17 years old, he was given six months to live. Over the months following, we had the incredible opportunity to get to know Zach, his girlfriend Amy and the rest of his family. We consider ourselves lucky to have gotten to know him and his family as much as we did. Zach inspired us in countless ways. He was the type of person that could share with you his own wisdom on life without telling you. He taught by example and left an impression on our lives that will continue to motivate us forever.
Children and teenagers battling cancer, like Zach Sobiech, are faced with extremely difficult symptoms, both from the disease they are fighting and the treatments that are mean’t to destroy it. We came to understand that one of the most difficult for them to overcome was hair loss. Not because it hurt the most, but because it separated them in appearance from everyone they knew. We wanted to do everything in our power to help make it better and it started with making them warm and cozy beanies.
As Zach endured treatment, we asked him, “What do you want to do before you die?” Zach told us he wanted to go up into the clouds. When Zach had just weeks to live, we were able to surprise him with a helicopter ride, which became the inspiration for our Superhero Adventures for children battling cancer. After seeing how meaningful this experience was for Zach, we decided to continue providing adventures for as many children as possible. The Superhero Adventure program is now a part of the Love Your Melon Fund and funded by the 50% of profit that we give every year.
We were not the only ones Zach inspired. Zach’s song “Clouds” reached No. 1 on iTunes after he passed away. He touched many lives with his incredible outlook on life, and his legacy continues now through the Zach Sobiech Osteosarcoma Fund at the Children’s Cancer Research Fund. Zach and his family created the Zach Sobiech Osteosarcoma Fund as a way to raise money for osteosarcoma research.
In tribute to Zach Sobiech, Throwback Thursday during Melon Madness 2018 features a launch of our Zach Sobiech Edition Beanies with Zach’s signature on a reflective patch. These beanies are available as a limited-edition collection and $10 of every Zach Sobiech Edition product purchased will go to the Zach Sobiech Osteosarcoma Fund at the Children's Cancer Research Fund to make a difference for more incredible children like Zach.
Zach Sobiech inspired, motivated and encouraged the lives of many. Facing a terminal diagnosis, he focused his attention on helping others. He was much too modest to accept it, but he was brave. He was courageous, creative and talented. Our friend Zach continues to inspire us to make a difference in our lives and in the lives of other children battling cancer. We can’t wait to see how you rock these Zach Sobiech Edition products and support Zach's important pediatric cancer research. Thank you for making this possible.
