WHAT IS A SWAB DRIVE?

WHAT IS A SWAB DRIVE?

Many individuals battling blood cancers like leukemia, lymphoma, sickle cell anemia or other life-threatening diseases need a bone marrow transplant in order to save their life. In order to receive a bone marrow transplant, patients need to find a genetic match, and many times, patients find themselves waiting or never finding a life-saving match.

This is where our partner Be The Match comes in. Be The Match manages the largest and most diverse marrow registry in the world, helping patients to find a genetic match and receive a life-saving transplant.

Through our partnership, Love Your Melon Campus Crew Members host swab drives at campuses all across the country to help more individuals join the registry. At a swab drive, Campus Crew Members set up a booth or table and provide information to people who stop by.

Those who choose to join the registry receive a Be The Match registration kit to get a “swab” of their cheek cells. This sample is then sent to Be The Match to test the tissue and add it to their database.

Through this simple process, our partnership with Be The Match has already added 8,874 members to the Be The Match Registry! Thank you for making this partnership possible through your support.
